T.L.C. Plus and Other Titan Mixes

What do you get when you combine Titan genetics with other species, like Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass? Great mixes, of course! Titan GLX, Titan Rx, and Titan Ultra all have that special “Titanness”, and while fantastic on their own, they aren’t the only answer to different grass applications.

Why a Mixture?

Most of the time, our Titan varieties, either straight or in our T.L.C Blend perform exceptionally well. But some applications have needs that are best met by adding the great features of other species, or types of grass (such as perennial ryegrass or Kentucky bluegrass.) For example, sometimes northern athletic fields and sod farms need even more density and tensile strength that no tall fescue can provide, but can only be found with Kentucky bluegrass. Other applications need lightning-quick establishment assistance found only in perennial ryegrass. These are just two examples of the many applications where you might find Titan genetics hard at work.

Two Titan Mixtures

T.L.C. Plus

Kentucky bluegrass is known for its ability to net lawns together – to “sod” plants in and create a bit of cushion or thatch. Many times this type of surface is preferred in athletic situations, like a soccer field. But growing Kentucky bluegrass by itself can be more demanding, especially as it relates to fertilization and water. That’s why we developed T.L.C. Plus tall fescue/bluegrass mixture.

T.L.C. Plus is mostly composed of our T.L.C. fescues with Titan genetics PLUS a small percentage of Kentucky bluegrass. This formula will be able to access water and nutrients at a deep level and be able to take the pressures of sun, shade, and heat, while still looking great. The Kentucky bluegrass component adds additional rhizome activity to provide a quicker recovery. In selected regions, T.L.C. Plus includes a heat-tolerant Kentucky Bluegrasses, like Thermal Blue. T.L.C. Plus is ideal for athletic fields, sod production, and other application where extra wear tolerance is needed.

DrySpell PLUS™

DrySpell PLUS™ is also primarily composed of our T.L.C. fescues with Titan genetics PLUS a small percentage of our elite perennial ryegrasses. These provide great-looking turf with richer color and better disease resistance due to the diversity of the genetics. By including these perennial ryegrasses, DrySpell PLUS™ establishes quickly, preventing erosion and soil runoff while helping create a lush, dense lawn.

Features

Traffic Tolerant

T.L.C. Plus can take the traffic! Ideal for athletic fields, sod production, grass parkways, and other places needing the extra “cushion” of bluegrass.

Diversification

T.L.C Plus has both genetic and species diversification to combine the strengths and benefits of differing tall fescue genetics and the resilience of Kentucky bluegrass. The two species are very compatible and make a dense, yet healthy disease-resistant, traffic-tolerant turf.

Grows in Sun & Shade

Shade tolerance is an important feature, especially for areas with mature landscape or near buildings where turf is desired on the shady side.

Rhizomes & Recovery

Our T.L.C. Plus has lots of rhizomes, aggressive tillers, and an excellent ability to recover from damage.

Disease Resistant

Each of the varieties in T.L.C. Plus has improved disease resistance against many diseases including brown patch, red thread, and rust. And since T.L.C. Plus includes the Titan genetic, T.L.C. Plus has great come-back ability.

Great Color

T.L.C. Plus is enhanced with the charm and rich green color of Kentucky bluegrass, adding to the overall appeal of the T.L.C. tall fescues.

Dense and Upright

T.L.C. Plus is the densest of the Titan/T.L.C. line. This high density helps reduce weed infestation and promotes upright attractive turf.

Sun and Shade

Sun

Our Titan varieties were selected to thrive in full sun areas with intense solar pressure, rapid moisture evaporation, and warm ground temperatures. Its deep roots and dense canopy work in harmony to both prevent unnecessary water evaporation as well as capture moisture and nutrients deep down into the soil. Studies have shown that tall fescue can put roots down as deep as six feet.

Shade

Shade tolerance is an important feature, especially for areas with mature landscapes or near buildings where turf is desired on the shady side. Titan Rx, one of the common components in T.L.C., has exceptional shade tolerance. In national turf trials conducted from 2006-2011, Titan Rx demonstrated that it could take shade better than most all other tall fescues. Out of 113 entries, including many popular varieties, Titan Rx had the second-highest score!

Rhizomes

The Titans have a reputation similar to what Timex® had with its classic watches. They can “take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’!” Some genetic qualities simply make these grasses get back up and live when other varieties either die or take longer to recover from damage. Whether that damage comes from hard play, intense disease pressure, pets, drought, cold, or other sources, there’s a good chance that your Titan lawn will come out looking good.

So why is that? What’s so special about the Titan grasses?

First of all, as mentioned before, the Titans just come from hardy stock. It’s like trying to answer the question, “Why are the McCrackens always so strong”, or “How come all the Morses can throw a ball so hard?” It just is!

Secondly, the Titans have something that only a few other tall fescues have, an extensive rhizome system. These horizontal underground stems or "rhizomes" spread out to bare spots and send out new shoots and roots which aid in quicker repair and the ongoing thickening of the turf stand. Sometimes tough play, a neighborhood dog, or some bad disease may come through and wipe out a few plants, potentially leaving your lawn with bare spots. So even when your Titan lawn gets knocked around some, the rhizomes constantly act as self-repairing tools, ready and willing to create new plants when needed.
